Frequently Asked Questions

What is Clinical Nutrition and Functional Nutritional Medicine?

Clinical Nutrition involves the application of evidence-based science to assess and manage health and disease states through individualised nutritional, nutraceutical, and lifestyle interventions. It emphasizes a client-centered approach, integrating clinical assessments like physical examinations and detailed case histories to tailor nutritional strategies.

Functional Medicine (including Functional Nutritional Medicine), within this context, complements Clinical Nutrition by focusing on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease, considering factors like genetics, environment, and lifestyle.

Certified Practising Nutritionists (CPNs) trained under AARPN standards use these approaches to provide intergrative, preventative, and therapeutic care, often in private practice settings like telehealth or home visits.

What is the difference between a Certified Practicing Nutritionist (CPN) and a Dietitian ?

Certified Practising Nutritionists (CPNs)  receive over 350 hours of supervised clinical practicum in one-on-one settings during their degree. This equips CPNs with advanced skills in individualised client assessment, nutritional & therapeutic nutrient interventions, lifestyle modifications, and counselling for private practice.

Whilst both CPNs and Accredited Practicing Dietitians (ADPs) can work in clinical settings such as private practice, an APD undergraduate training focuses on aged-care & hospital-based settings, along with food service industries.

CPNs’ training in physical assessments and intergrative pharmacology allows them to independently assess a patients health status and manage nutrient-drug interactions.

CPNs have TGA Schedule 1 exemption, enabling autonomous prescribing of nutrients at theraputic doses within the scope of Functional Nutritional Medicine, enhancing flexibility in addressing complex nutritional needs. APDs do not hold TGA schedule 1 exemption.

In contrast, APDs rely on patient self-reporting, referrals, or lab results to determine dietary interventions and are generally limited to dietary adjustments within clinical guidelines.

Can you work with those on the NDIS?

Yes! NDIS participants are able to engage the services of a CPN. Please see the “NDIS services” page for more information.

Do you work with all ages?

We treat people of all ages with the empathy, respect and dignity they deserve.

Irrespective of someones physical or mental health history, or current health status, all interventions prescribed are relevant to the patients presenting needs and age appropriate.
